Last month, the Omega Speedmaster Flight Qualified pilot’s watch leaked on social media. Normally, we don’t respond to leaks or rumors, but the number of questions we received about this watch was (and still is) getting out of hand. At least for now, this new Omega Speedmaster pilot’s watch is.
And I have asked. Every time, the answer is: These are the watches for sale. I have purchased 4 Omega watches brand new from various ADs (including a boutique) and all have been the “display” model in the case. So, good luck with trying to return the watch to your dealer for a new one “from the safe.” Maybe it will be possible, maybe not. Omega wanted the alaska project and x-33 to replace the traditional moonwatch. So it seems to me that Omega places a lot of emphasis on "the first watch worn on the moon" more than "flight qualified" when calling something a moonwatch. I guess any Omega that is a homage to the original could be considered a moonwatch using Omega's standards. Any of the UK members buying new Omega currently. I am about to pull the trigger on something but have now also been offered the 210.90.42.20.01.001 007 Bond watch. Considering I am Brit I have never been that taken with James Bond link but it is a very nice watch - especially on the Bracelet.
Omega Seamaster (pre De Ville) ref. 14775 SC - 61, cal. 610 from ca. 1961. Love the dial and no lumen hands and index 😀 Before (auction pics) and after pics with a new crystal, secondhand, service and a NOS 1037 with 570 end pieces from the drawer 😀
It is the worst for looking at watches, and even worse for photography. My local boutique has floor to ceiling windows, so great lighting under normal circumstances on the main floor, however whenever something that requires special attention happens (like showing off all the new watches), its usually down downstairs in the 'bar/chill zone'. Omega used to use ETA based movements in their older seamasters but in the last 5 years they have switched to coaxial and now master coaxial movements in their planet oceans and DSOTM speedmasters which is a great in house movement..I believe all the Omega models are now in house and the ETA movements are now used in lower S WATCH brands .
I agree with you that "it's all one sentence with one meaning", so my read is that according to Omega, every Omega Speedmaster Professional ever manufactured per specs that were in-place on 7/21/1969 and all design iterations thereafter, have all "been popularly known as the Moonwatch."
