Let’s begin this report about “The History of the Iconic Rolex Submariner Small & Big Crown” with a really special group shot of rare vintage Rolex. We see some different lume Rolex used originally in their early days of their tool watch evolution. The Submariner ref. 5508 is a “Small Crown” variety, featuring a 6mm crown (for comparison, the “Big Crown” Submariners included 8mm crowns) and a slightly slimmer case. Rolex produced the Submariner 5508 until 1962 and its production run overlapped with other models like the Submariner 6538, 5510, and 5512. Crown: Rolex adapted its water-resistant, screw-down crown design from the 1920s — which used a gasket and a receiving tube housed within the watch case — for use on the Submariner. The Twinlock system made use of two O-rings for a water-resistant seal, while the more modern Triplock system from the 1970s uses an additional O-ring.
Additionally, the reference 6205 is a “small crown” Submariner, and lacks crown guards and first-fifteen minute markers on the bezel. While these features (or lack thereof) are not exclusive to the 6205, they do help separate it from later references and other vintage models such as the “big crown” reference 6200.
